Many patients ask what activities they should avoid to best care for their lower back pain. The graphic above shows what positions put the most pressure across the discs in the lower back. (Specifically, this study looked at the 3rd Lumbar Vertebrae.) If you look at the chart, you can see that laying flat on your back is the position of least pressure. Even laying on your side is appreciably more stress than laying flat. At the other end of the spectrum, sitting while leaning forward and lifting weight puts the most strain across your back.
When dealing with significant lower back pain, keep this in mind. Leaning forward while lifting is the stress you will want to avoid.
